Version 1.5 brings cubemap reflections, specular highlights, and overhauled shaders!


Hey all! This is a massive update for Retro Shaders Pro, adding a ton of new features and tweaking how lots of things work under the hood!

First and foremost, there are fewer variants of the core shader: the Retro Lit, Retro Vertex Lit, Retro Unlit, Retro Bilinear3 Lit, Retro Bilinear3 Vertex Lit, and Retro Bilinear3 Unlit shaders have all been rolled into a single new Retro Lit shader. This new main shader provides a simple lighting mode toggle which lets you choose between Lit, Texel Lit, Vertex Lit, and Unlit modes on the material, as well as a filter mode toggle to easily pick from Point (Nearest Neighbor), Bilinear, and N64 texture filtering. All the same features as before, but more convenient to use!

On top of that, the Retro Lit shader now supports specular lighting from any number of light sources in every lighting mode besides Unlit (of course!) and cubemap reflections, so you can create very convincing PSX-style metallic objects. You can now apply dithering in screen space as well as texture space (which should have been there originally! It was just tricky to integrate with the CRT post process pixel size), and you can perform vertex snapping in Object or World space or turn it off completely, on top of using the existing View space mode.

That's not all! The Retro Skybox Cubemap and Retro Skybox Procedural shaders have been combined into one new Retro Skybox shader, which lets you toggle between a gradient sky or a cubemap sky, and you can enable procedural clouds on top of either kind of sky background. This shader also supports dithering, just like the base Retro Lit shader. The old graph-based procedural shader has been kept in the optional graph package in case you want to create your own retro skybox shaders!

Alongside all these changes, I have made drastic changes to the editor windows for each shader, so all the options should be better organised and tooltips should be more helpful. Retro Shaders Pro 1.5 has been tested on Unity 2022.3, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, and the new 6.3 LTS, and more improvements will be coming over time!
